Dr Robyn Coleman MBBS (Syd Uni) ACCAM –

As a retired doctor I know the powerful therapeutic effect of art on anxiety, depression, grief and dementia. In 1996 I was diagnosed with Sjogren’s Syndrome, an autoimmune disease causing dry, dry eyes, chronic joint pain and fatigue when working in Occupational Medicine. The debilitating pain and fatigue lead to chronic depression. Self expression was a way out of depression. It makes you more outwardly oriented carefully observing the natural world. It slows you down to actually study the landscape or still life with their myriad of colours, shapes and patterns. It gives you an appreciation of the natural world in a perfectly formed flower or the light reflections in water.

I am exhibiting at the Creative Doctors Visual Arts Evening on 5 Oct 2017 in the North Sydney Community Centre. I also do voluntary work for the Arts Health Institute which does great work bringing the Creative Arts to Aged Care with evidence of improvements in memory and behaviour.
