Festive fever

It’s the end of the year. It’s really very actually quite hot. I sometimes wonder if I’m going to melt walking home from work (yes, I walk home. It’s wonderful.). I arrive at work sneezy and sweaty, and have clinical symptoms concerning to the nursing staff because diaphoresis and a runny nose do not bode well. But I’m also unfortunately quite atopic (to some, acopic) and thus plagued by our present voluminous pollen problem.

But alas! Life is otherwise good. So this week’s gratitude goes to loratadine for being excellent at preventing some (if not all) of my ridiculously hay-fever-ish symptoms. Gratitude also goes to the hot water urn for filling me with warm water while the air conditioner works too hard, making the ward frigid during the day. And gratitude to my forgetful mind, for forgetting that I had swapped shifts earlier this week meaning I actually had an extra day off.

What else is going on in the world out there? I’ve read so many interesting articles that it’ll be a challenge to wear them down to only a handful.

Have you ever thought about the people who sit there, trawling through the “flagged” content on the internet. Well spare them a thought now.

A predictive keyboard tried to write a new version of Harry Potter. I found it hilarious. Hopefully you do too. You can read more here.

Could a flat extrasolar object be a visit from distant aliens? Well, probably not, but it’s an interesting thought.

If you haven’t heard of the uncomfortable and all-too-familiar story, Cat Person, published in the New Yorker this week, you’ve obviously not spent enough time on the internet.

TED talk of the week:
Did you know that animals can have mental illnesses too? What do they mean for us as humans?

Book to read:
If you feel like you have too much wanderlust and not enough time to travel, this autobiographical account of Cheryl Strayed’s soul-searching hike may be just the thing to fill your tired soul. It’s an emotional and physical adventure. Wild.
